The Night We Said Yes

A garden full of string lights, all our favorite people, and a dance floor that didn't empty until three in the morning.

Rafael really wanted string lights, and string lights only work once it's dark. So we got married in the evening, in the garden, with everyone who matters to us. This is for everyone who was there, and for Grandma, who sadly couldn't make it.

Chapter I

Before It Begins

“Since noon my dress had been waiting in my parents' hallway, among all the old family photos. I only put it on at six, but I must have looked at it a hundred times before that.”

My friends were supposed to wait outside until I was ready. That worked for about two minutes.

I only saw these two photos weeks later. Rafael was ready two hours early and kept checking his watch, he was that excited. Lucas, his best man and best friend since first grade, helped him into his jacket.

Chapter II

The Yes

Just before seven I got to see the garden on my own. The chairs were still empty, the lights were already on. It was the only quiet moment of the whole day.
Then the music started, and Dad walked me down the aisle. I had promised myself I wouldn't cry.

“Rafael lasted about four seconds. I lasted until I saw him.”

We wrote our own vows. When Rafael got to the part about my cooking, the whole garden laughed.

From then on, we barely let go of each other.
And just like that, we were married. I remember thinking: well, that was quick.

The sparkler tunnel was my maid of honor's idea. She kept it a secret from us for three months.

Chapter III

A Glass to Us

The champagne was already waiting in the hall. My friends had secretly agreed to all wear red. I was the last to notice.

“Our first glass as a married couple. Rafael finished his in one go and still claims he was just thirsty.”

After that, everyone wanted to clink glasses with us. At some point we stopped counting.

Chapter IV

At the Table

The blue napkins were meant to match Rafael's suit. He thought that was overdoing it, until he saw the tables.

The seating plan cost us more nerves than the rest of the planning put together.

“Rafael's aunt baked the three-tier cake and brought it over on her lap in the car. Not a single scratch.”

Chapter V

Until the Last Song

For the first song we had the dance floor to ourselves. By the second, there wasn't a free spot left.

At some point party glasses turned up, and nobody knows where from. I kept mine on until the very end.

“Around midnight Rafael's cousin took over the microphone. He can't sing, and that night nobody minded.”

Thank You

Thank you for being there, for singing, crying and dancing with us until the very end. When the lights came on at three, we were still in the middle of the dance floor. We've looked at these photos so many times, and we still spot someone new in the background every time.
